Well, Arnie tried to warn us, and as we cosy up to 2026, the warnings are becoming a reality, and fiction is now becoming a fact.
It’s only been a few days into 2026, and we have seen Russian arms firms targeted by AI-driven cyber-attacks, alongside high-profile incidents like the ClickFix Campaign’s BSOD attack and the NordVPN breach.
Safe to say that the future of Cyber Security 2026 is looming with large language model security risks, threats to personal data and security, ransomware attacks and many others.
If you think a firewall and antivirus are enough to stop these attacks, then you probably haven't moved on from Windows Vista yet, and it’s time you did.
This year calls for some serious cybersecurity introspection and a ready-fire-fighting team to rise against bad artificial intelligence in cybercrime.
1: Automated Hacking using AI: The Login Breach:
Back in the day, when someone tried to hack your login credentials, it would take days and a lot of brainwork.
But now, Machine learning cyber attacks are the flavour of the season.
Yes. This all began when the innocent Pen-testing framework, or the penetration testing tool that is often used to check security, fell into the hands of hackers.
What was initially used by ethical hackers to test security is now being deployed by hackers and attackers to brute force their way into your systems.
Attackers deploy autonomous AI agents paired with an LLM. The two of them work in tandem, where the AI agent gets the job done, and the LLM supports the AI agent with the necessary information.
And this is where it gets interesting, these AI-driven cyber attacks are spearheaded by these AI agents that identify login pages and instantly parse HTML for credential fields, login forms and try to capture IDs, passwords, and OTPs.
Now that the information is gathered, there are two major ways the attacks are conducted;
With brute force attacks, multiple passwords for the same ID are attempted. But this is almost useless because of the 3-strikes policy. This is where you or the attacker could get locked out of the system after 3 failed login attempts.
But in the event of a password spray attempt, things are a lot different and effective. Password Spraying, although a low and slow attack, attempts one common password across thousands of accounts to bypass the 3-strike policy.
Think of it this way.
Remember those helpless but annoying door-to-door self-help book salesmen?
Password Spraying is something along those lines, except instead of pounding on one door until the owner loses his mind and calls the cops (the three-strike policy), he rings every bell on the block with the same pitch.
Security ignores him cause he is not exactly harassing one person to look ‘phishy’…See what we did there?
Now, when we examine the Cyberverse and the world of AI-powered cyber attacks, this salesman is an autonomous agent. This agent is not looking for a ‘NO’. For this agent, ‘NO’ stands for Next Opportunity, until one of them has left their door open.
This slow but patient process is what allows machine learning cyber attacks breach massive networks without even alerting or alarming anyone. Humans need hours for this. An AI agent with an LLM can launch login attacks in minutes by deploying a pen-testing framework and automating the workflow.

Once the plan is set and the time is ripe, the agent launches the attacks wherein files are encrypted, malicious codes are launched, and data is exfiltrated to lock you out or threaten you with wiping out all your data.
These attacks can also be quite personalised. What this means is that a phishing email can be sent to you looking so convincing that you find it harmless and familiar, and that’s where the breach begins.
And the worst part? The code keeps changing like a shapeshifter. This makes it nearly impossible for any kind of traditional security to detect.
These polymorphic generative AI cyber attacks and all of the other related operations run in the cloud, which makes this a sophisticated ransomware-as-a-service cybercriminal model.
3: AI phishing attacks - super personal, super intuitive for all the wrong reasons.
The good old phishing scams, now powered by AI.
When it comes to phishing scams, the dead giveaway is the bad grammar, weird vocabulary, terrible spelling mistakes, or just a weird feeling about it. yeah?
Now, imagine this: what if this comes to you in the most legitimate way possible and you actually come to believe that this is from an authentic source?
Okay, now here’s what happened right before you clicked that ‘Phishy’ link.
Phishers use LLMs from the Dark Web to generate crisp, fluent and legible emails in almost whatever language you choose.
That eliminates the first and loudest suspicion.
Now all they have to do is copy this email and paste it, and finally send it to whoever they want to attack.
When we speak about LLMs, we are not talking about LLMs like ChatGPT, Gemini and alike.
These other forms of LLMS exist on the dark web without restrictions or guardrails against malicious use and pose a serious large language model security risk.
The worst part about these AI phishing attacks?
If these attackers really want to get you, they can personalise their emails and send these AI agents to search out your social media accounts and all your presence on the internet.
The mail would look so hyperpersonalized that you might even gaslight yourself into believing that you actually signed up for something and forgot.
4: Deepfake Cyber Threats and the Story of the 35$ Million Voice:
Artificial intelligence in cybercrime really brought the metaphor ‘Putting words in your mouth’ to life.
Yes. All these attackers need is a 3-second recording of your voice or your video. Once it is fed into the generative AI, it goes ahead and literally mimics everything about you. Now all the attacker needs to do is come up with a script.
And if you thought that cutting off from all your social media accounts, deleting your voice from the voicemail, and living like ‘Patrick’ under a rock could save you from deepfake cyber threats, you may want to think again.
In one incident of AI-driven cyber attacks in the year of 2021, according to IBM, there was an audio deepfake that was executed.
In this deepfake cyber threats incident, the attacker, reportedly impersonating their boss, asked the employee to wire them 35 million dollars to a particular account. Guess what?
The naive and clueless employee believed the attacker and the company lost 35 million dollars, just like that.
AI phishing attacks have been evolving, and in 2024, an attacker attempted a deepfake video and simulated a video pretending to be a CFO of the company and convinced an employee to wire 25 million dollars to the fraudster.
Remember the saying, “Seeing is believing” Now, the future of cyber security 2026, seeing is not enough unless they are present in person.
5: AI-driven cyber attacks, The CVE Genie and its Autonomous Hacking Tools:
This is a prime example of how the weakest cog in the wheel can overturn the whole vehicle. Except in the security industry, these exploits are published, and they are called Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures.
These publications or reports are written by security experts who identify major vulnerabilities, describe them, number them, document them, and catalogue them, and this information is publicly available.
This is another research project that welcomed the darkness, and unfortunately, autonomous hacking tools have turned this public safety data into a weapon. Attackers took the data and information of this CVE and used an AI agent to develop a CVE genie.
Now, what this agent did is, it fed the CVE data to the LLM, which went through all the problem statements, pulled out the salient details and then came up with a plan and then sent this bundle of information back to the genie.
This genie then processes all of the vulnerabilities and then devises the exploit code for the attackers.
This was pretty much 51% sucessful, and you know what this means for AI-driven cyber attacks?
It means that anyone with a bare minimum understanding of how coding works can easily use this information and deploy an AI agent at their disposal to exploit systems.
This costs less than $3 (the price of a pack of Kool-Aid), and this lowers the barrier to entry so significantly that anyone with basic coding knowledge can launch high-level AI-powered cyber attacks.

These agents enhance the AI-driven cyber attacks by also taking strong economic decisions for you, by thoroughly analysing the victim’s financial worth, the assets they hold, and finally calibrating the ransom they can demand to ensure they are just enough to be fruitful and low enough for the victim to be compelled to pay.
