Secured Messenger

What is AxCrypt’s Secured Messenger?

Secured Messenger is a secure, end-to-end encrypted messaging feature built into AxCrypt. It allows you to send private messages to any email address using AES-256 encryption, ensuring that only the intended recipient can read the content - no matter which device they’re on.

The Secured Messenger can be accessed from any web browser or through AxCrypt’s Desktop and mobile apps as well. Messages remain encrypted using 256-bit symmetric encryption, even when synced across devices. All data in-transit is further protected with Transport Layer Security (TLS), ensuring end-to-end privacy during transmission.

AxCrypt’s Secured Messenger at a Glance

Private, secure communication across devices

Send and receive end-to-end encrypted messages from any device, with full control over how long each message remains visible - once, timed, or forever.

AES-256 encryption for complete confidentiality

Messages are encrypted using AES-256-bit encryption in Counter (CTR) mode with a unique, randomly generated Initialization Vector (IV) for every message. This ensures even repeated messages look completely different when encrypted.

Secure and Private Servers

AxCrypt’s Secured Messenger operates on servers located in the EU, fully compliant with stringent GDPR regulations and NIS2 cybersecurity standards.

Ephemeral Session Keys

Key wrapping of the message is done using the NIST specification for AES Key Wrap. The key derived from the message with PBKDF2-SHA512 is only used as a key encrypting key.

How Do We Secure Your Messages?

AxCrypt’s Secured Messenger encrypts every message using your account password, which is never stored on your device or our
servers - ensuring that only you and the intended recipient can access the content.

We use the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) with 256-bit keys in Counter (CTR) mode, along with a unique, random Initialization Vector (IV) for each message. This ensures maximum confidentiality and prevents pattern detection.

Each message is encrypted with a newly generated 256-bit session key. This session key is then securely wrapped using AES Key Wrap, following NIST specifications. The wrapping key is derived from your password using PBKDF2 with SHA-512, and is used solely for
encrypting the session key - not the message itself.

In practice, here’s how it works:

  • Encryption: The message is encrypted with a random session key using AES-256. This session key is then encrypted with your
password and attached to the message.

  • Decryption: When the recipient opens the message, their password is used to decrypt the session key, which is then used to decrypt
    the message content.

This layered approach ensures that your messages are always secure - both in transit and at rest.

AxCrypt provides strong encryption without any backdoors. If you forget your password, your encrypted messages will remain inaccessible. Since they are locked with your original password and we do not store or have access to it, we cannot help recover or decrypt your files.
